I don’t start each month with a new topic, but make the curriculum flow, using the curriculum map as a guideline to be sure I’m on pace to do what I have planned. Although the standards are placed within a month, I’m a little more flexible in my actual teaching. One format is text-based, is smaller, and aligns each standard by month of the year. I have found that this separate focus helps students go deep with one skill before moving onto the opposite one. Once I make sure students have a solid understanding of addition, we focus intently on subtraction during the middle of the year. The first part of the year is heavily focused on addition. Those can be placed anywhere during the year. However, there are a few standards / units that can be changed around, like the measurement and geometry standards. Most of the content is chronological and meant to be taught in the sequence it is presented. Although a few of the standards have changed months here and there (like geometry and measurement), most of it has remained consistent.
